Alexander S. Mackler
Alexander (Alex) Mackler is Counsel in the Litigation Department of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. His practice focuses on complex litigation, crisis management, and high-stakes government and internal investigations. Mr. Mackler has extensive experience at the highest levels of federal and state government, as well as a deep trial background in both federal and state courts.
Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Mackler was Chief Deputy Attorney General for the State of Delaware, where he acted as chief legal officer and day-to-day leader of the 550-person office. He directed the prosecution of all the state’s criminal cases, oversaw litigation involving state agencies, and supervised civil rights enforcement and consumer protection matters. Under his leadership, the state achieved historic reductions in violent crime, implemented sweeping law enforcement reforms, and secured landmark litigation outcomes. Mr. Mackler also directed Delaware’s legal response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Mackler has held various federal government positions. In the Obama-Biden White House, Mr. Mackler was Deputy Counsel to the Vice President where he advised senior officials on a range of legal matters. As an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Delaware, Mr. Mackler prosecuted and tried federal criminal cases. Mr. Mackler was a member of President-elect Biden’s Department of Justice Transition Team where he led reviews of prosecutorial policies and structural priorities across DOJ, with a focus on the FBI, ATF, and DEA.
Mr. Mackler is a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience. He has argued and tried cases, including high profile matters, in every court in the State of Delaware—including the Court of Chancery and the Delaware Supreme Court—as well as in federal court.
Mr. Mackler’s commitment to public service extends to his military service. He spent seven years in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, achieving the rank of Major in the Delaware Army National Guard. He currently is a member of the Delaware Judicial Nominating Commission. In 2023, he was named one of Delaware’s 13 Most Influential Lawyers by The News Journal.
Mr. Mackler graduated first in his class from William & Mary Law School, where he served as an editor on the William & Mary Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree, B.A. cum laude, in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
